Nathaniel Borenstein is an American computer scientist known for developing the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) protocol, which allows people to send email attachments that exchange various types of data files. In 1992, he created the first MIME message, which featured a picture and sound file of Bellcore’s barbershop quartet, the Telephone Chords. He has also been involved in other software projects such as metamail and Safe-Tcl, which have been utilized by millions of people. This ground-breaking innovation has made digital communication easier and more powerful, as well as helping individuals address problems and anticipate future demands. Apart from his expertise in computer science, Nathaniel Borenstein has also been involved in entrepreneurial ventures, co-founding First Virtual Holdings – the world’s first “cyberbank” – and launching NetPOS.com.
