Session 4: Urban and Rural Design for the Pandemic Era in the World of Flux

Urban society formed since the industrial revolution is being shaken by sudden changes in technology and by the pandemic. Urban areas normally become the starting point of widespread pandemic. Modern cities were not designed to cope effectively with new normal life during and after a pandemic which require more social distancing, less personal contact, and smaller social gatherings. Living with fresh air and a cleaner environment is becoming a demanded trend. Whereas we can witness the future of more urbanization, rural development requires new thinking to find an optimum linkage between urban and rural development especially in the post-crisis context where uncertainty prevails. This session will focus on:

  • Will urbanization continue in patterns similar to those before the crisis or will they change? If so, what would the new pattern look like?
  • How should we design a city with embedded protective measures and effective crisis-preventative facilities and infrastructure?
  • Will there be a change in the urban design concept – transportation, housing, working, living, etc.?
